Safety Engineering & Management
SEI has developed over 50 safety cases for FAA system acquisitions, modifications, and changes to air traffic procedures or operations. We have supported ground systems, including ADS-B, ASDE-X, ASR-9/Mode S mods, Runway Status Lights, Long Range Radar (ARSR) replacement, Controller–Pilot Data Communications, Tower Data Link System enhancements, Air Traffic Integrated Display System, Common ARTS mods for multi-sensor data fusion and ADS-B integration, STARS automation mods for ADS-B integration, and En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) integration with ADS-B. In addition, we have support aircraft systems that include Enhanced Visual Acquisition & Approach, Airborne Conflict Detection & Alerting, Flight Deck Based Merging & Spacing/Interval Management, Surface Indications and Alerts, and weather & aeronautical information displays.
We provide hazard analysis for all stages of system acquisition and life cycle, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis, Subsystem & System Hazard Analysis, Operation & Support Hazard Analysis, System Safety Assessment Reports, Comparative Safety Analysis, Target Level of Safety Analysis, and Failure Modes & Effects Analysis. We develop fault tree analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, minimum cut set analysis, and event (logic) tree analysis for safety cases.
SEI was a key participant in FAA-led separation standards work groups to analyze the use of new or modified surveillance systems to maintain safe separation between aircraft. We led Operational Safety Assessments for international FAA/EUROCAE/RTCA work groups. We also worked with the FAA to develop and implement safety policy and training.
SEI has authored content in the FAA Safety Management System (SMS) Manual, the Safety Risk Management Guidance for System Acquisitions, Safety Oversight Circulars, and guidance on integrating FAA Aircraft Certification AC 23.1309/25.1309 and FAA SMS policies for air/ground systems
